Don’t Abuse it Mijo, 2020

Don't Abuse It, Mijo was created in the month of October near the end of the year. Due to the pandemic I had less access to a wider variety of materials and space to work in so I managed to create works for a while that were more minimalistic in the process. Social anxiety about power was in a all time high since the election was in a month at the time so I made a collection of photo images and collaged them together through social media apps. "Dont, abuse it, mijo" was a statement my grandmother has told me a month before she passed away back in 2018 and when I'm going through certain struggles I remember times with my grandmother and her statement was one of those memories. Different aspects of power is explored with symbolic images to define each type.

KAT DE GUZMAN
Nagsasalita ka, nagsasalita ako (You Speak, I Speak), 2020

'Nagsasalita...' was made in Early Fall as part of my BFA senior thesis project which investigates the complexities being a first-generation Filipino-American in the United States. The video features my mom teaching me how to speak Tagalog as it used to be my first spoken language but have forgotten over time. This is evidence of my assimilation so I relearn Tagalog as a way to reconnect to my roots.
